2012: The War for Souls
Coming 18 September 2007 from Tor Books
December 21, 2012, may be one of the most watched dates in history. Every 26,000 years, earth lines up with the exact center of our galaxy. At 11:11 on December 21, 2012, this event happens again, and the ancient Maya calculated that it would mark the end, not only of this age, but of human consciousness as we know it. But what will actually happen? The end of the world? A new age for mankind? Nothing? The last time this happened, Cro-Magnon man suddenly began creating great art in the caves of southern France, which to this day remains one of the most inexplicable changes in human history. Now Whitley Strieber explores 2012 in a towering work of fiction that will astound readers with its truly new insights and a riveting roller-coaster ride of a story. A mysterious alien presence unexpectedly bursts out of sacred sites all over the world and begins to rip human souls from their bodies, plunging the world into chaos it has never before known. Courage meets cowardice, loyalty meets betrayal as an entire world struggles to survive this incredible end-all war. Heroes emerge, villains reveal themselves, and in the end something completely new and unexpected happens that at once lifts the fictional characters into a new life, and sounds a haunting real-world warning for the future.
Pre-publication notes about 2012
The Hollywood Reporter (March 19, 2007) reveals the plot of 2012 in an article discussing the feature film plans: “Strieber's story centers on an academic researcher who discovers that multiple versions of Earth co-exist in different dimensions, but all are threatened by an apocalypse to occur in 2012 prophesied by the ancient Mayans. By opening a portal into a parallel universe, he makes contact with his double to stop the prophecy from being fulfilled. The book is due in the fall by St. Martin imprint Tor.” “...[my story] takes place in a triad of 3 parallel earths ...the change of age literally opens doors between worlds that coexist in the same space...” Whitley Strieber (March 2007) “...the theme of this novel is a new vision of the soul and the secret of resurrection” (editor of Strieber's email newsletter, March 2007).Publisher’s Marketplace (Nov 28, 2006) reports: “Whitley Strieber's 2012, a new novel of alien invasion, sold to Bob Gleason at Forge, in a very nice deal, by Russell Galen at Scovil Chichak Galen Literary Agency.” A Tor/Forge press release gives the only indication that 2012 features characters introduced in The Grays: “2012 revisits the issues that Strieber first explored in The Grays... In 2012, another alien species has come to Earth and only teenager Connor Callahan and the last remaining Grays can save humanity from a harrowing fate, and quite possibly, the end of days as predicted by the Mayans.” (March 16, 2007) “A mysterious alien presence unexpectedly bursts out of sacred sites all over the world...plunging the world into chaos it has never before known” (from an advance synopsis). “It's about three parallel earths coming together on December 21, 2012, as the negative world attempts to capture the positive world and the reconciling world (ours) gets caught in the middle of the battle,” wrote Whitley Strieber on his official forum (July 13, 2007), continuing by noting “I'm using 2012 didactically in the book. It's not about things that I think might happen in the real world, but about things that unfold all the time inside us, as we engage in this terrific inner war that is life, which, for each of us, decides the fate of our own souls.”
